Over the last few years, figures have suggested that the male suicide rate in construction can be three times the national average. We at Northern Gas Networks would like to help tackle those numbers and keep our workforce healthy and happy, both in the body and mind.

The Moodzone booklet has been put together to provide helpful hints and tips on how to deal with anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts and starting conversations with other males. The booklet is kept in the canteen and is also available as a PDF on a memory stick for those who feel more comfortable reading at home. The Moodzone booklet is not only helpful for those dealing with mental health issues, but in assisting others in recognising signs and symptoms in people close to them.

In addition to the Moodzone booklet, we have also donated to men’s mental health charities and are training mental health first aiders in the workplace.

We believe the Moodzone booklet is an opportunity to start vital conversations between men and women in the construction industry. I have been approached by members of the engineering team to say what a good read it was, and how they learnt things they didn’t know before.
