Spring Dam

On the M20 Junction 10a scheme, the Taylor Woodrow Vinci Joint Venture has used a product to protect the Aylesford stream from silt and erosion.

The stream was highlighted as one of the most sensitive receptors running through the majority of the site, so the project team immediately starting reaching for the best methods of sediment control.

The Hy-Tex Erosion Guard, more aptly known as a ‘Spring Dam’ offers a quick solution to prevent silt movement through the watercourse and erosion of the riverbed. It is placed on the riverbed perpendicular to the follow using weights, thus eliminating the need for messy straw bales and reduces dependency on expensive tanks. Sediment is trapped in the coil of the spring and the pliability of the product ensures that it can be easily removed for cleaning and reuse, reducing waste.

Across the site, Spring Dams are placed in ditches leading to the stream and at four strategic emergency response stations along the river. Quick deployment from the emergency response stations will ensure that if a silt incident should occur, Spring Dams can be used quickly and effectively to reduce silt pollution downstream.
