In an industry such as construction where a large number of different languages are spoken, it is important to ensure that the site management team are able to effectively communicate with all operatives.

We operate a translator scheme on site whereby all contractors are required to identify operatives who can act as translators, where needed, for new operatives who struggle to understand or read English.

By operating this system we ensure that we are able to convey all safety messages accurately.

We ask all contractors to provide hi-vis vests with the word ‘Translator’ on the back so the individuals are easily visible when on site.

In addition to this, we felt that a notice board with a photo of each translator and the languages they are able to speak would further enhance the scheme as it enables any new operative entering site to identify (via the countries flag) which translator will be able to assist them through induction and on-site.
