Upcycling Competition
The project team came up with the idea of organising, in conjunction with the academy’s design and technology department, an ‘upcycling competition’.
The aim of the competition was to challenge pupils to build something using waste timber from the project, including damaged scaffold boards and pallets. The competition really got the pupils thinking about what they could do with the materials they were presented with and the results have been impressive, not your traditional bird and bat boxes, but pieces of furniture, including a table, a chest of drawers and a planter with integral seating.
It has enabled pupils to work with timber, a material they would come across on a construction project, and to develop their design and engineering skills – both valuable for anyone entering the construction profession.
The competition showed that the skills they used in making the furniture are transferable into the construction industry – also that, for those who enjoy working with wood, there are carpentry and joinery apprenticeships available.
