The QED Ultraviolet (UV) Hydrocarbon Analyser is being used on this project to X-Ray florescent (XRF) metals analyser to classify approx. 60,000 tons of fly tipped material and historic contaminated material.
The two analysers provide accurate and rapid same day analysis for contaminated land practitioners, waste management operators and regulatory authorities; this results in reducing costs and delays to the programme. Rapid on-site analysis is compliant with Environment Agency Guidance and is best practice for a contaminated land site.
Delays are greatly reduced as results are same day even as quick as 30 minutes rather than 3-10 days. This allows for more accuracy, faster analysis to ensure full compliance and delineation of contamination, which in turn leads to reduced cost for disposal as they minimise the hazardous waste produced. Additionally cost per sample is reduced from £200 per sample (air dried sample) to £40 per sample (rapid testing onsite)
The QED cuts out the laboratory turnaround time with a high degree of accuracy. The data can be used to support the operational strategy of hazardous and non-hazardous materials. The cost of treating or disposing of soils contaminated with fuel, oil, tar or creosote is high, with material classified as hazardous costing as much as £3000 per single lorry. It is beneficial that the analysis used to classify the soil is the best available and only reports genuine Petroleum derived hydrocarbons. It is also able to identify bitumen’s, creosotes and coal tars as well.
