At 1 Finsbury Avenue, part of the 10 year re-development framework for Broadgate, we invited students from the University of East London to prepare a competition design for our site welfare facility.
From the competition, five students were chosen and given a paid placement to develop a welfare proposal for the project which encompassed wellbeing and sustainability.
Part of the development included cataloguing and saving demolished materials from the original building for potential reuse in the welfare proposal, a period of experimentation and focus on a series of recycling proposals. In the end beyond taking products and reusing them for their original purpose, two areas of up-cycling were developed:
- The Door Wall/Furniture – utilising old doors to create furniture
- The Cloud – utilising old lights to create a ‘feature’
The six month student engagement has not only been successful in reducing waste by careful coordination and avoidance of uncontrolled change and recycling existing on site materials. It has also been successful in providing well thought-out facilities with focus on wellbeing which are respected and appreciated by all those working on site.
It has also been successful in engaging local students and providing meaningful opportunities with all now either engaged in further education or employment. The scheme has also been further developed with a year 2 competition now underway to design reception area for the building. All of this meets the aspirations of British Land and Sir Robert McAlpine’s community legacy for Broadgate.
