Women’s Prison Accredited Employability Support

Prison programmes within construction tend to be aimed at male prisoners, however this was different. The contractor provided accredited ‘Be Your Best’ employability sessions to residents of the Bella Centre in Dundee, Scotland’s first community custody unit for females, to help them prepare for release.

The programme helps women with personal evaluation, job searching and networking, writing a CV, personal statements, disclosure letters, interview skills & mock interviews. Once they completed the course, they received an SVQ Level 3 qualification. Only one resident was due for release and they secured a placement for them with one of their subcontractors.

This initiative creates a more diverse workforce in the industry. Working with female ex-offenders aligns with principles of social justice and equity as it aims to provide equal opportunities for rehabilitation and reintegration regardless of their past mistakes. The employability program provides the women prisoners with a SVQ Level 3 qualification & potential positive destination. It will also have a broader positive impact on society by reducing crime and fostering social & economic inclusion.
