Supporting Men’s Health Week

A full site stand down took place so that a tool box talk discussion could take place on the key issues around men’s health to mark Men’s Health week.

The following key points were discussed:

  • A waist size of over 37 inches can have serious health implications for the heart, lungs, blood pressure etc.
  • No more than 14 units of alcohol per week.
  • Five portions of fruit or vegetables each day.
  • 150 minutes of exercise per week or half an hour a day.
  • Regular health check-ups such as MOTs or early detection of cancer (prostate, testicular, lung, thyroid or skin cancers, along with the others!)
  • Cancer Focus NI – 028 9066 3281
  • NHS sexual health helpline: 0800 567 123.

Suicide Information

In the UK, the highest suicide rate was for men aged 45-49. In Northern Ireland, suicide rates for both men and women are higher than other UK nations. Causes for concern include unemployment, home stress, loneliness, poor lifestyle, excessive drinking etc.

What can be done to help this?

Exercise, speaking with someone or a doctor, meeting friends, doing things that will reduce stress, be open about stress and anxiety…

The floor was opened to the team on site to discuss any issues they felt were worth discussing, and any questions could be addressed. Posters, flyers and information were in place around the site.
