Breedon Bioblitz

During this contractors Biodiversity Week, they held a 24-Hour BioBlitz at Mullaghglass. Historically, Mullaghglass was a basalt quarry and landfill which was closed – where they now are undertaking an ongoing restoration project. The site borders the Slievenacloy Nature Reserve.

Over 30 Biologists attended for 24 hours to record as many species as possible on the site, and over 650 species were identified with the headline species being breeding Barn Owls – Ireland’s most endangered species being identified in the Belfast Hills for the first time in 50 years.

The species data list was fed into the National Biodiversity Network (NBN) Gateway which in turn will increase the biological knowledge of the area. They also identified all of the species of dragonfly in Ireland.
