Building Relationships while Promoting the Industry

Whilst on site, the project team built a strong relationship with a local primary school, with the aim of encouraging the children to consider the different career options available within the industry.

The children visited the site throughout construction, to see how the build was progressing. They were provided with PPE which they could keep and were given an induction before entering site.

In addition to this a different member of staff visited the school on a fortnightly basis to explain to the children what they did within their role – an Architect, Structural Engineer, Quantity Surveyor, Engineer, Project Manager, Safety Manager, Ground Worker, Frame Erector and Bricklayer

It encouraged the children to think about all the different individuals involved in constructing a building and the many careers on offer. We created a workbook for the children to complete after each visit so they could record all that they learnt about each job.

To give the children a better understanding of seeing a project from start to finish, the pupils were encouraged to share the knowledge they had learnt in order to help the team build a shed in the school playground. This is being used as a literacy shed and is a place for the pupils to read.
