Company Wide Safety Philosophy

Operative safety must be a top priority for contractors, with efforts made to disseminate relevant information and provide adequate training.

See the examples below for one site’s comprehensive approach to this:

• The project intends to encourage all employees to act as responsible creative individuals, rather than just simply following instructions.
• The company developed a series of ‘Next Gear’ safety videos. Employees are given a card with 3 QR codes which lets them download the videos at any time; the company can monitor when the videos are viewed.
• They also introduced stand up inductions where a smaller number of employees are walked around a large induction room with the new concepts explained. This approach encourages interaction and sustained attention to the induction.
• One to one discussions with a senior manager are held within 48 hours of induction so employees can provide feedback on the process.
• The Visual Task Sheet method statement has been modified so that employees and supervisors have the opportunity to take ownership and are allowed to make suggested changes during the works.

This concerted effort to change the safety culture will encourage operatives to take ownership of safety issues on site, which will hopefully drive up standards across the board.
