Londoners are facing the same health challenges as people across the UK with ‘lifestyle’ diseases such as diabetes, obesity and heart disease on the rise. Such conditions can take a toll on health and life expectancy.
A leading cause of illness and early death among Londoners today is physical inactivity. Transport can play a significant role in enabling people to be more active each day, thereby improving their health and wellbeing. Cycling and walking are the main active ways of travelling in the Capital. Cycling levels tend to vary between London’s diverse communities. Older and disabled people are less likely to cycle which could be down to ease of access or comfort.
In addition to the health benefits of cycling and with sustainable transport becoming more desirable, London’s cycle network is seeing more freight being transported by cycle e.g. cargo bikes.
Transport for London (TfL) is constructing more cycle superhighways to help encourage more and safer cycling. For those that already cycle and for those that would like to get involved it is vital we ensure routes are comfortable and safe especially during roadworks.
TfL worked collaboratively with St George, FM Conway, Wheels for Wellbeing and two cargo bike companies (Pedal Me and Cargo Bike Life) to design a traffic management layout that accommodated bespoke and abnormal sized cycles. This involved building a segregated cycle facility that had smooth ramps, comfortable widths and super elevation to help with turning cargo bikes (especially those with two wheels at the front).
The project received praise from many London cycle groups and was a finalist at the London Cycling Awards 2018 for the ‘Best Inclusive Cycling Scheme’.
