Drift Pin Redesign

This contractor developed a modified drift pin, which is used during pipeline installation.

The redesign adds two welded steel plates on either side of the handle to physically limit its rotational movement. This prevents the handle from swinging unexpectedly and striking nearby surfaces or personnel, thereby improving operator safety.

The idea was presented by a young operative on site, and was then endorsed by the project management.

This addresses a common but often overlooked safety hazard with a simple, low-cost mechanical solution. Rather than relying solely on procedural controls or PPE, the design modifies the tool itself to reduce risk at the source.

This reflects a practical, engineering-based approach to injury prevention that can be immediately understood and adopted on site.
