Flexible Working

At CSJV (Costain Skanska Joint Venture), all office staff are offered flexible working, with working from home to take place up to one day a week but with staff also enabled to work compressed hours and part time. We are aware that an ability to work flexible hours makes an employer attractive and this is vital to attract talent into the construction industry.

The challenge for CSJV has been how to extend flexible working to our site teams, so several of our foremen at one of our Central London sites have worked together to devise a flexible working programme to balance workload, the programme and life outside work. The team takes half a day every two weeks working away from the site to complete tasks such as admin, e-learning, training and paperwork.

The results have been very positive, with the team more aware of each other’s tasks as they cover for each other when it is their time to work away from site. Additionally, staff have been able to keep up to date with their training courses, as well as, crucially, spend time with their families.

To ensure that work can still be delivered in a timely manner, flexible working is built into the six-week programme look ahead. Since this programme has been trialled, we have seen an increase in the number of inspiring staff looking to join that specific team to take advantage of the flexible working arrangements and the initiative as won the CECA Change Award 2018.
