This contractor incorporated a friction resistance fluid transportation system for the turning of a Tunnel boring machine (TBM).
A Fluid transportation system was suitable for the applications of moving and turning the TBM from southbound tunnel to the Northbound tunnel eye. The Weight of the TBM was 2,100 ton and the fluid transportation system enabled the team to turn the TBM in a confined area by combining maximum lifting capacity with the minimum force effort to manipulate the load.
In essence the system reduces the friction resistance between the load and the surface it is turning on by vibrating nitrogen bubbles and the use of silicone oil to reduce drag and resistance. A smooth level surface able to withstand compressive stress of 36 MPa is prepared and sliding surface installed using steel plates. The steel plates in turn are cleaned and lubricated with non-acid silicone oil.
The smooth lubricated surface and the vibrating Nitrogen pillows enables the operator to manage and manipulate relatively large loads with ease, eliminating the need for large cranes, specialist workforce, manual handling, lift plans and all the statutory requirements that involve traditional lifting operations.
This is the safest method to move heavy loads in restricted spaces with no added requirements for installed rails. The system can be used to turn and manipulate any large load that include cranes, plant, machinery, vehicles.
