GRAHAM Construction’s Weavers Quay project in New Islington Manchester moved a pedestrian crossing for the duration of the works to faciliate safe road crossings for people in the area accessing the footpaths and canal towpaths in the area.

There is also a metrolink stop, health centre and pharmacy in very close proximity in addition to on street parking meaning it is a popular pedestrian thoroughfare so it was determined to be very important that the new pedestrian crossing was well lit at all times but tapping into mains power sources would have required a lot more planning and inconvenience to the locality.

Instead, GRAHAM decided on a solution that would also utilise renewable energy sources and delivered a zebra crossing where all the belisha beacons were independently solar powered and installed with minimum disruption.
