The Battersea Power Station Phase 3a project is using hybrid excavators to help complete the excavations on site with minimal impact on the local community. The excavators are being used in locations close to nearby sensitive receptors to help minimise the projects impact on the local community.

The excavators have a traditional engine which is complemented by a lithium-ion battery. The battery is charged during deceleration movements and low load operations and stored so that it can be utilised to power the slewing. This means that for these operations the engine is automatically switched off – resulting in less noise and fewer emissions.

There are not only community benefits. The machine has improved cabin visibility to help progress the works in a safe manner and due to using battery power rather than diesel engine less fuel is used resulting in fewer carbon emissions and subsequently improving the air quality both for the workforce on site as well as our neighbours.
