Installing Tie Rods

This contractor worked with their tie rod manufacturer to devise an approach to the installation of tie rods that reduced the average time to install a tie rod by over 50% and made the overall operation safer. The initiative comprised a number of elements ranging from changes to the manufactures standard products and pioneering new ways of working.

The first step was to analyse how tie rods are typically installed and what challenges are typically encountered, following this, changes to the installation methodology were devised as were changes to the design of the tie rods.

A time and motion study was carried out on the traditional method for installing tie rods whereby hundreds of hours of video footage was captured. Following detailed analysis of the footage, site visits and various workshops with the installation operatives and the tie rod manufacturer, changes were proposed and subsequently implemented. These changes greatly improved the time taken to install tie rods and made for a safer operation. A further iteration of improvements have been proposed following feedback from the latest install.
