Learning from Health and Safety Near Misses

Historically across the industry, the adoption of lean reinforcement design has meant structures are subject to potential collapse due to poor temporary supports and high wind loads.

The projects at Tunbridge Wells North & Vines Cross include the construction of new NSAF’s in the form of a large reinforced concrete structure divided into separate cells to house the process streams.

Civil Engineering supplier Ward & Burke were engaged and asked to look at a temporary works solution that would allow for the re-bar to be installed full height without external supports so as to mitigate the risk of collapse.

Ward and Burke came up with the solution of using steel trusses welded to the starter bars every 6m and run the full height of the wall, therefore negating the need for temporary supports and providing a robustness against high wind loads.

Ward and Burke with the assistance of our ‘Engineering Services’ team fine tuned the system to meet the criteria for the New NSAF structures.
