Overcoming Ovarian Cancer

On the Royal Albert Project we work alongside many contractors on encouraging women into construction and assist them with developing new skills to progress within the construction industry. We have developed over the course of our project to get women into construction have meant the increase in female employees has reached over 70. On the project we have many occupational health campaigns which in the past focused solely on male employees due to the industry being mainly male populated.

Due to the increase in female employees we decided that we would welcome Ovarian Cancer Action to deliver a talk on site to any female and male staff who were keen to know more about this type of cancer. Ovarian Cancer Action attended and delivered information via signs, symptoms and support leaflets for staff to take away with them.

We were highly keen to get the message across as not many of our staff knew that ovarian cancer is the sixth most common cancer in women in the UK and all were not aware that the cervical smear test does NOT detect ovarian cancer and there is no national screening programme for the disease. The talk was important for us to help staff be aware of the symptoms and seek help as soon as they notice anything is wrong and this for us had to be shared.
