Providing Pathways for the Community

In the area surrounding a large development in Oban, there has been a long standing issue with a lack of pedestrian pathways from the Dunbeg Village to safely access the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS) campus and different parts of the area for walks.

Before works on site started, pedestrians would have to use a section of main roadway to walk on as the adopted footpaths did not link up. As a temporary measure the main contractor have installed a hardcore footpath keeping pedestrian and vehicular traffic separate.

There were challenges to delivering the pathway, including the pathway running along a bay and water outfall and a live main road. Agreement from the land owners also needed to be sought. Despite these challenges, the contractor has now installed a new pathway for pedestrians. In addition, to ensure safety, the contractor installed additional railings around outfall by the pathway to prevent any fall hazards.

The final resulting footpath allows safer walking routes for pedestrians in the area. The new pathway also keeps pedestrians away from the site entrance further enhancing road safety for all users.
