Providing ‘Period Dignity’ within the Construction Industry

Over the past few years, the construction industry has been trying to improve the diversity of the workforce by encouraging more women into the industry.

However, as the industry is still fairly male orientated, there is still a risk that welfare facilities and toilets may not be suitable for female members of staff (for example there may not be clean/ separate facilities, or sanitary waste bins may not be provided or regularly emptied). This is why Unite the Union has started a campaign for “Period Dignity”, aimed at promoting open discussions about the needs of the female workforce – in this day and age, periods really needn’t be a ‘taboo subject’.

The subject of periods has come up in the news several times over the past few years, what with outrage over the tampon tax and period poverty. People have also been raising awareness of these issues on social media using the hashtag #freeperiods. Although there are charities aimed at tackling period poverty (such as Bloody Good Period), the construction industry should make having a period as easy as possible for its female workers.
