Recycled and Reusable Plastic Pallets

A continual issue found on construction sites, from both an environmental and health and safety focus, is the use of traditional timber pallets for material delivery. These usually have a very limited lifespan, and after one delivery can very rarely be used as is again, requiring further manufacture to make them fit for use. Fire loading is also a common and ongoing hazard, if wooden pallets cannot be removed from site immediately.

On this project, the brickwork contractor has swapped all timber pallets for those made of recycled, robust plastic.

The benefits of this are:

  • All pallets are made from 100% recycled plastic and are fully recyclable after they have reached their full lifetime use.
  • The robust material is less prone to damage compared to traditional wooden pallets, meaning their lifespan is significantly longer.
  • No requirement for a change in the SSOW as they can be seen as a near exact substitute.
  • Each pallet is made up of a lightweight plastic and is easily handled by one worker when empty, therefore reducing manual handling.
  • Compared to using the traditional wooden pallet option, as these pallets are being utilised on their third project rotation, the contractor has a saving of approximately £2000 per project.
  • Each pallet can hold the same weight and material volume as a traditional wooden pallet, meaning there is no requirement to purchase more, or require further storage areas on site.
