Smart Camera System

This contractor is constantly looking at ways to minimise risk and achieve a zero AFR rating. To do this they have used technology to help them achieve this, and carry out research and development pilots to push boundaries utilising cutting edge technologies.

For this project, the aim was to use digital technology to help automate the data collection process and provide insights to improve safety and productivity.

A real-time solution was developed, which integrated standard CCTV equipment with Computer Vision Artificial intelligence (AI) systems and data visualisation software to improve monitoring and manage alerts to the site team throughout the construction process.

The ‘smart camera system’ was designed around a core set of information requirements to ensure that appropriate information and insights would be provided to the site team, and involved teaching the computer system to recognise 30 different objects (people, PPE, machinery and materials) and store this intelligence in an object library. The benefit areas to achieve were, but not limited to:

  • Site security
  • Health and safety compliance
  • Production
  • Construction plant recognition
  • Proximity issues
  • Quality assurance
  • Contaminated material
  • Unauthorised access to exclusion zones

The project also used drones to gain data for measuring volumes, along with detailed project reporting and survey sets to monitor progress and record keeping. This enabled day-to-day collaborative planning with stakeholders, in a logistically challenging environment.
