The BCEGI site team at Middlewood Locks wanted to encourage primary school children to study STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), designing and delivering lessons based on the National Curriculum. To illustrate Materials – Change of State the team enlisted the children as screeders.
They brought mixed screed to the school, and when the children had read the method statement and risk assessment and put on their PPE they helped set up a safe area with signage.
Then they spread the screed. This brought to life shapes (safety signs), counting and measuring (proportions for mixing), materials properties (CoSHH assessments) and change of state as the screed dried.
The children were attentive and keen and the teacher told us the next day ‘they are still buzzing from your visit.’
The school are able to build on what the children did in role play to reinforce the lessons.
