Temporary Bridge

This contractor installed a 120m long temporary bridge providing the travelling public and pedestrians with a safe route while the Southern Piled Viaduct is demolished and replaced. The site team and design team were challenged with creating a sustainable diversion where all materials associated with the diversion were to be either re-used or repurposed. This was achieved while constructing to recognised engineering standards.

All elements of the bridge will be reused and/or repurposed after completion of the project. The following examples:

  • 32no bridge units will be reused on other projects to create a wide variety of temporary bridges
  • Steel tubular piles and crossheads will be reused for permanent pile casings and steelwork beams (70t)
  • Class 1 import material for platforms will be reused for other civil engineering projects in Central Scotland (30,000 t)
  • Bespoke steel plate tie in will be reused by other sites for temporary works
  • All highway barriers and footpath fencing will be reused on other road scheme projects
  • Temporary road surfacing will be removed and used for future site compounds and hard standing areas.

By removing everything and reusing the materials both locally and nationally, the site will leave no lasting negative legacy within the area.
