Waterproof Membrane Installer Trailblazer Apprenticeship

This company is committed to helping meet the industry’s need for a multi-skilled and qualified workforce, by bridging the skills gap through the development and delivery of a wide range of training courses. This includes its award-winning apprenticeship, the ‘Waterproof Membranes Installer’ qualification as part of the Government’s Trailblazer initiative.

Prior to the introduction of this apprenticeship, there was no recognised apprenticeship scheme for a multi-disciplined qualification in flat roofing. The course has been developed through the dedicated trainers at Langley (with over 65 years of combined experience within the roofing industry). It encompasses Building Regulations, health and safety, installation processes of the disciplines and many other components. Industry associations including the NFRC and the LRWA have shown their support by the attendance of key decision-makers from the associations.

This two-year course comprises of 14 modules covering the installation of reinforced bitumen membranes, liquid roofing and single ply. Each module consists of a combination of classroom and practical sessions to ensure that the apprentices gain both theoretical and practical skills to enable them to undertake their work safely.

The value of this initiative is further enhanced and made attractive for many employers as the apprenticeship will be almost completely funded. Non-apprenticeship levy payers can expect the apprentices to have 95% of the apprenticeship funded.

So far, Langley has enrolled two cohorts totalling 19 apprentices in 2020, with a view to another cohort in 2021 and the possibility of taking the course to the Midlands and North West.
