On the One Crown Place Project for Mace, we are striving to reduce our environmental impact. One area of focus is our water use both in the construction activities on site but also focusing on the water use in the site welfare. An area we have looked at is focusing the operatives on the contribution they can make to water conservation both on site and outside of work.

To aid in this endeavour we have introduced five minute shower timers into the welfare showers so the operatives can monitor their timing and to raise their own awareness to water use and its conservation.

It is also about assisting in the behavioural change for the operatives in their water use at home and outside of the construction site and hopefully thinking about reducing their water use in all areas of their lives.

The average person takes 8.5 minutes to shower. By reducing this time to five minutes, it saves about 35 litres of water every time they use the shower. So by reducing the operatives shower time they can save 240 litres of warm water every week if they shower every day in the site welfare facilities. Both energy and water usage is reduced.

The world has a finite amount of water and only 0.007% is available for human use/ consumption, and we use a lot of that precious 0.007% in our showers.

Water is a precious resource that we shouldn’t needlessly waste. Thanks to high populations and high water use, even the UK is often subject to water shortages – making it the 8th most water scarce country in the EU.
