Working Conditions Survey as Part of a Modern Slavery Strategy

As part of the contractors strategy to help eradicate modern slavery, one of the projects conducted a working conditions survey among the site operatives in partnership with a survey provider. Each worker was invited to participate in this anonymous survey, to answer comprehensive questions about their working conditions, safety, and wellbeing.

The survey process measured working conditions and helped to address and prevent modern slavery.

The survey was conducted over the phone, with workers answering a series of 20 simple questions by pressing 1, 2 or 3 as ‘yes’, ‘no’ or ‘I don’t know’. 800+ workers were targeted by the survey and nearly 350 people have participated.

The benefits of conducting this type of survey on site are that it:

  • Raises awareness about the modern slavery threat in the industry
  • Contributes to companies’ duty of care
  • Celebrates areas of success
  • Highlights areas where improvement is needed
  • Flags any potential risk or illegal situation
  • Drives continuous improvement – the survey will be conducted every quarter for a year to enable progress to be tracked.
