Working with a Local College

Over the duration of ISG’s construction process at Richmond-upon-Thames College (RUTC), we have ensured that the construction site is engaged with the community as much as possible. The integration with RUTC is clear due to the number of past engagement events that have been carried out. Examples of this include the supported learning students’ planting operation, Site Management work experience and student site tours. This present collaboration to offer work experience ensures the formation of a strong relationship Between the college and ISG.

The most recent example of engagement between the college and ISG is the arrival of a catering van on site. RUTC kindly supplied our site with the van in question. The provision of the van provides an opportunity for the operatives on site to purchase hot meals during their breaks. The problem faced by many operatives on site was that there weren’t many options to purchase lunch close to the site. The provision of the catering van has solved this problem.

To further cement the relationship between the college and ISG, the college arranged for students to gain work experience in the catering van on site. The main responsibilities of the students are to aid in serving meals to the operatives. The benefit of this is they gain vital experience of working life to aid them in their development as working professionals once they have left further education. The introduction of the catering van has been well received by the working operatives on site who have voiced their praise to the college for providing them with the means to access hot food each day.
