The A556 Knutsford to Bowdon Improvement scheme have developed relationships with numerous local primary and secondary schools as well as local colleges and Scout groups to raise awareness of the project and environmental mitigation measures that have taken place.
The team actively work to promote and generate an interest in the construction industry and have carried out numerous presentations and initiatives within local schools but until recently, had not had any primary aged students visit the site.
Linking up with a local business support group that has been set up to support the disadvantaged areas of Longridge and Shaw Heath, the team hosted a My World event to a class of year six pupils from a local primary school.
Prior to the visit, the community and safety teams realised that the students would still need to be inducted but felt that the generic one that was being used would not be engaging or relevant given their level of understanding.
It was important to deliver an induction that covered the on-site safety messages as the team wanted to provide the opportunity for the students to leave the classroom environment and experience a working construction site first-hand.
A site specific induction presentation was designed to ensure that the key messages were delivered in an eye-catching and interesting manner and provided the necessary background information about the scheme.
The feedback from the teachers and facilitators was extremely positive and it was felt that the level of information was pitched at the right level.
