Compulsory Boot Check for the Workforce

This contractor carried out a nationwide stand down safety footwear campaign checking that all workforce had footwear that complied to the minimum S3 Standard for boots, and S5 for wellingtons to reduce the risk of injuries relating to incorrect footwear and ensuring the workforce were choosing the appropriate footwear, that is comfortable, and fitted correctly so that it suits the purpose intended.

In total they checked over 2800 pairs of boots over 93 sites, and found 19% to be below the minimum standard. All operatives were then checked again to ensure they had suitable footwear for the tasks being carried out.

For every check carried out, no one advised that they had their boots checked before. This raised discussions regarding people leaving boots until they were falling apart before being replaced.
