Environmental and Sustainability Champion

This contractor has a workforce appointed Environmental and Sustainability Champion who is responsible for promoting their environmental and sustainability policies and priorities day-to-day on site.

They arrange for the champion to complete the Considerate Constructors Scheme’s Care for the Environment e-learning course. The Champion is then responsible for periodically encouraging others to engage in environmental initiatives. For example, they recently ran an “Upcycling Competition” where tradespeople were asked to find creative ways to reuse and recycle discarded or excess materials on site, with the most creative response receiving a small prize. The winner was a terrazzo tile made from broken and discarded marble/stone offcuts. This is an engaging way to facilitate a meaningful way for tradespeople to buy into environmental and sustainability priorities.

As it is the tradespeople who are largely responsible for enacting the environmental and sustainability policies and priorities, they felt it was important for the Champion to be locally-appointed by the tradespeople on site. This created a stronger sense of involvement instead of senior management just dictating initiatives.

Through active participation in small-scale environmental initiatives that directly fit their skillset, tradespeople feel more involved in their environmental and sustainability priorities and are encouraged to think of further creative ways to better meet these challenges.
