Floating Platforms for Nesting Birds

Whilst doing some preparation work in the dock, a moorhen nested on one of the floating platforms, therefore work was suspended until the chicks hatched and fledged from the nest.

When they started to look at how they could support the wildlife in the dock, the contractor developed an idea to produce platforms that would encourage nesting and give the wildlife somewhere to sleep and rest out of the water.

Working with environmental specialists they built floating platforms, that were anchored down, filling them with plants to create as much of a natural habitat as possible.

This encouraged the local habitat to be within the floating platform and prevented from going onto construction site. The results have been outstanding with swans, ducks and moorhens all making use of the pontoons and all have successfully nested.
