Hutton Construction Ltd has a zero tolerance approach to modern slavery.

Anyone can become a victim of modern slavery. However, victims of this crime are often people who are promised a job in the UK and then forced by traffickers to work as labourers or in factories for instance, for little or no money.

Through threat, violence or coercion they may be forced to live in squalid accommodation and have their identity documents taken from them.

At our Oswald Street Site, where we are building an Adult Day Care Centre for the London Borough of Hackney, the site team members had a discussion on how we could address this.

Our Work Experience Apprentice did some research on Modern Slavery and came up with the great suggestion of putting posters in toilet cubicles, as a victim of modern slavery would be scared to be seen in public writing down the helpline number and would be able to write the number down without fear of being seen in the cubicle.

We put modern slavery helpline posters in various locations around the site, including mobile phone and smoking shelters as well as the toilets so that all operatives were aware of them.

In addition to this, we established which languages were spoken on our site and went on to the GOV.uk site and downloaded posters in the languages that were spoken on site. Several copies were printed off and cable tied together so that they could be hung up in the male and female toilet cubicles.
