Site Training Area

We have formed a site training area to be used by local primary & secondary schools, local colleges, as well as youth organisations helping kids with career choices. The area was formed using some of the placements we had from local organisations as their own mini project to complete over their placement, as most of them were keen to become joiners.

Within the training area we have different areas showing different types of work and trades across the site. They are shown how to bed and lay bricks by our Bricklaying Supervisor, starting by laying mortar onto timber to get them used to using a trowel, leading to them building a small wall from a foundation.

We also have our Roof Tiling Contracts Manager talking them through how to set out a roof, and then how to start and complete fitting tiles and verges. This is done on a lean to roof that we have built off hoarding.

They are also shown how to prepare and lay mono blocks within a small kerbed area by our Ground Works Ganger, where they have the pattern previously set, and then have to try and follow to completion.

Finally, we have a mini timber kit, which is shown built in the picture, but is stripped apart and laid out as components. We only give out a drawing which identifies the different components and tools available to complete the job, and it is up to their team to try and work out how it goes together, and we inspect that it has been correctly assembled. Where there are two or more groups we time them to provide a bit of competition.

This has been well received by all visiting groups, and always gets the most compliments on our evaluation forms.
