Battersea Power Station Development phase 3 operates a Sustainability Leadership Team with representatives contributing from the construction manager, trade contractors, consultants, and the client. The team meet bimonthly to share best practice, knowledge and collaborate to enable continuous improvement regarding sustainable development.
Such a direct, collaborative forum between the key parties involved in the development is extremely unique and challenges the traditional separation between the client, construction manager, contractors and supply chain. Instead, a ‘one team’ approach is encouraged on the development enabling the project to lead the industry towards true sustainable development.
Examples of the transformative work undertaken by the team include the launch of a Net Zero Carbon Strategy, the creation of an apprenticeship mentoring network and contractor knowledge share to demonstrate initiatives taken and opportunities to reduce carbon footprint and waste generation.
The Sustainability Leadership Team also recognises the work of individuals and companies in the pursuit of environmental and social sustainability by receipt of the monthly Sustainability Leadership Team Award. This positive reinforcement ensures sustainability is visible and ensures hard work is recognised, contributing to a positive, one team culture. If adopted more broadly, this could encourage full involvement from all parties across a development, regardless of job role. Furthermore, if widespread, this initiative would ensure developments collaborate, share knowledge, and participate in the most current initiatives.
