Accommodating Local Businesses During Works

During a three week surfacing scheme, planned road closures would result in restricted access to and from a local business.

With the A64 comprising two lanes with no hard-shoulder at this location, essential surfacing maintenance work required full road closures of the westbound carriageway, and Paradise Lane directly accesses the A64 in the closed length.

The works were programmed over night, generally from 8pm to 6am, to minimise disruption to commuter traffic. However this meant affecting business for the hotel. After discussions, we agreed to maintain access with the provision of a vehicle escort service through the road closure.

As part of our planning, we had discussions with the hotel management regarding their events to ensure that we were aware of the likely demand for this service. The hotel advised that only a small number of guests would be staying overnight, with the majority requiring to be escorted through the road closure.

In total over 1,000 guests were affected, including wedding functions, history tours, dinners, Christmas parties and carol concerts.

In addition, we provided the hotel with the information to enable them to advise event organisers of the road closures and arrangements for access that will be in place.

With some late additions to the event list and confirmation of the expected numbers (the majority of the events had in excess of 75 guests) we agreed to increase the number of escort vehicles to three in order to manage the anticipated demand and to ensure waiting time is kept to a minimum.

This ensured that we considered the impact on our neighbours and provided facilities to manage this.
