Fildrain Geo-Composite Drainage Material

This project’s original embankment design required that a 500mm thick granular drainage layer, sandwiched between two layers of geotextiles, be placed onto the prepared formation before construction of the embankment. This layer serves two functions, one of which is drainage, and the other is to protect the formation from heavy construction machines. On this project the granular, (stone), layer was replaced by a layer of Fildrain, a geo-composite drainage material, overlaid by 300mm of site won fill material.

Using Fildrain avoided the project from having to import 8824 tonnes of granular material, which would be the equivalent to 444 lorry movements on and off site, representing a significant reduction in fuel use and the associated carbon emissions. Only ten lorries were required to deliver the 50,000m2 of the geo-composite drainage material needed by the project.

Using this eliminated the need to purchase a significant quantity of quarry won stone, (quarrying is a carbon intensive process), and enabled the re-use of site won excavated material. The use of this has resulted in a 66% reduction in carbon emissions over the original design. There are also significant environmental benefits to those living around the project through a reduction in lorry movements.
