To champion inclusivity, Interclass, supported by the CITB’s Industry Impact Fund and the National Federation of Builders, has developed a bespoke neurodiversity training programme tailored specifically for the construction industry.
Neurodiversity refers to the different ways in which individuals’ brain’s function, learn, and process information. Embracing neurodiversity can empower people to reach their full potential and expand the talent pool in construction, but achieving this requires awareness and understanding of the unique challenges and strengths neurodivergent individuals bring.
This training programme addresses critical gaps in awareness and support identified in a survey commissioned by the National Federation of Builders. Conducted in June 2023 with over 1,000 construction workers, the survey revealed that 1 in 4 workers in construction consider themselves neurodivergent, and 17% have received a formal diagnosis. Yet, 75% reported that they were not asked about neurodiversity during hiring or onboarding – a significant missed opportunity to offer support and create an inclusive environment.
The report also highlighted challenges faced by neurodivergent workers, with 38% believing there is no or not much empathy for neurodiverse workers in the industry. These statistics emphasise the need for increased awareness and support.
Overall, the survey findings highlighted the prevalence of neurodiversity in construction as well as several challenges faced by neurodivergent construction workers, including lack of awareness, support and limited empathy.
To address these challenges, Interclass has developed an e-learning course consisting of 14 modules which are organised into two pathways – Neurodiversity Awareness and Neurodiversity for Managers – designed to promote neuro-inclusive practices across all levels.
