Effective Storage of Combustible Materials

After being asked to loosely cover stored materials on-site to reduce risk of fire, in a building in London, the contractor identified various concerns with this.

Firstly, they had plastic over plastic, as materials had already been delivered with plastic wrapping on. Secondly, it looked messy and was a trip hazard. Thirdly, it started getting taken by other subcontractors. Lastly, it occurred to the site management that in case of a fire, this material would shrink back, exposing the material, and therefore not protecting it from a fire.

They therefore decided to engage with their material supplier, to discuss effective solutions and agreed on a branded, more robust, sealing cover.

The new covers can be used repeatedly instead of the normal single-use packaging for such sites by different subcontractors, saving plastic and waste. The new material exceeds compliance of the main contractors current standard (LPS 1207) and been tested to achieve the more superior BS 476-20 where fabric retained its integrity and stability at a temperature peak of 1000oC for over 60 minutes.
