The profile of the ground beams feature a difficult to achieve mitred slope into granular stone. Major issues arose with collapse of the excavation or stone.
In order to combat the issue a new style of machine was brought to site with the ability to angle the bucket in multiple planes however this proved to be slow and cumbersome and issues with stone collapse persisted.
Further talks were held and a metal fabrication shop was commissioned to create a custom bucket which mirrored the profile of the ground beam. In the end two buckets were created. One which dug out the profile in the clay substrate and a second which cut out the exact profile of the stone.
This is a bespoke solution to a difficult detail. The solution greatly increased productivity and improved the quality of the excavation. The approach was noted both by the client and senior management as being a great solution that they had not seen before.
