Avoiding Service Strikes by Project Excavators

This contractor used a safety control measure, the Leica X Watch system in machines used for the bulk excavation of the underpass on this project.

This safeguarded operatives from hitting the props, bridge and monitoring instrumentation that were installed in the work area. As-built information of the items they wanted to avoid hitting was installed onto the excavator’s GPS system. They then set parameters around these items, using the Leica X Watch system, which slowed the machine down if it got within a certain distance of the objects, and as it encroached further, the machine would completely stop. The parameters can be changed whilst work continues for flexibility and accuracy.

This new technology decreases the risk of damaging or impacting on other machines, materials or infrastructure already on site, therefore increasing overall safety. The individual operating the machine with the Leica X Watch system installed has to acknowledge any warning notifications in order to proceed, decreasing accidents.
