College Skills Training Academy

This contractor partnered with Salford City College (SCC) and the Local Council Road Innovation Group (LCRIG) to support the development of the SCC Group Highways Skills Training Academy. This academic syllabus whilst in support of Highways and Civil Engineering, provides a practical training environment to assist experience and knowledge development.

LCRIG and the college held awareness of significant skills shortages at both the operative and technical level for the industry and were looking at an alternative approach to upskilling increased cohort numbers. The new academy aims to address this skills gap by providing practical site skills, allowing students to develop safe working practices to set the foundations of their career.

The Salford City Skills Academy initiative will not only meet the immediate needs of the industry, but it will also provide a sustainable and highly skilled young workforce. A workforce geared towards innovation and excellence to drive the highways sector to become a safer and more rewarding place to work, educating groups within a realised highways and groundworks environment with full PPE and safe system of works compliance throughout every day of education. The contractor have been heavily involved in the design proposals for the new establishment, along with committing a substantial number of resources to complete enabling and excavation works, within secured land held within the college grounds.

The academy offers a diverse selection of career opportunities for individuals who are interested in the highways sector. The integration of the apprenticeship standard will not only prepare students for highway maintenance roles, it will also allow them to develop an understanding of emerging innovations within the industry such as BIM standards, and modern methods of construction (MMC). This will ensure that apprentices are gaining a wide range of skills that will be adaptable for a future career in the highways construction industry.
