Cycle Safety Event

Oxford is a cycling city and, with the popularity of cycling within the city on the rise , it is a great way to travel, keep fit and be environmentally friendly.

As part of the contractor’s project, they have recognised the importance of cycling safely. With increasing construction traffic and heavy goods vehicles making deliveries to the site, they wanted to contribute to improving cycling safety.

To promote cycling safely in the community, they organised a cycle safety event in Oxford.

The event featured:

  • Changing Places – Their subcontractor set up a tipper/bin lorry to allow cyclists to see what the driver sees. The cyclist were allowed to sit inside the HGV, and understand where the blind spots are from the drivers perspective.
  • Rollapaluza ‘Cycle Challenge for Charity’ – Two static bikes allowed challengers to race each other in a head to head. Ticket money for the Rollapaluza challenge was donated to Maggies, Sobel House and Oxford Winter Night Shelter charities.
  • ‘On ya Bike’ – Bike Mechanic – Free health checks and maintenance was performed to passer-by bicycles.
  • Thames Valley Police – ‘Safe to Pass’ display. Thames Valley police gave advice on safe overtaking distances. This was to enable motorists and cyclists to see what is the safe distance to pass.
  • Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service – Provide health and safety advice and information.

Throughout the day, they engaged with numerous cyclists and motorists and a large amount of positive feedback was received from the local community.
