Diabetes – Safety in the Workplace

This contractor has implemented a diabetes safety in the workplace training course which provides an understanding of diabetes and the associated risks if the condition is not understood and managed correctly in the workplace.

This is mandatory for all project managers to complete and supports their people pillar initiatives as part of their sustainability strategy of ensuring it is a happy, healthy and inclusive place to work. This is deemed necessary as there are statistics proving the risk diabetes present for individuals carrying out high risk activities. Site teams are receiving and being trained in the use of Hypo wallets to test the workforce when deemed necessary.

Providing specific awareness of diabetes in the workplace and the associated risks is important to be promoted within the construction sector, where VCSE’s can also be supported to deliver this training. 700 people a day are diagnosed with diabetes and there are currently 4.6 million people in the UK with diabetes, of which 1 million do not know they have the condition.
