Interactive Bridge Building Activity

This contractor has created an interactive engineering activity for 9 to 16 year old’s to construct an authentic 10m span cable stayed bridge, using real world materials and techniques, enhancing their STEM skills and making connections to careers in civil engineering.

The activity supports the school curriculum, as well as encouraging confidence, logical thinking, problem solving, team participation skills and responsibility among participants. The activity also tackles stereotyping, engaging the interest of the whole group of children before they encounter societal constraints. Through enabling children to build the bridge they are encouraging them to think about engineering principles in a practical way.

The experience aims to promote awareness and understanding of civil engineering amongst young people, their parents and teachers by providing educational events activities based around a large scale model of a cable stayed bridge.

The activity supports the school curriculum, particularly helping the understanding of the action of forces and behaviour of materials, as well as encouraging confidence, logical thinking, problem solving, team participation skills and responsibility amongst participants
