In construction, when carrying out a lone working risk assessment it is often only associated with operatives working in confined spaces or a remote part of a site where access is limited. However, what often get’s overlooked is the office-based staff who often find themselves working late in isolation or team members travelling between sites on their own.
This has become a lot more common since the increase of flexible/remote working and has created a demand for a solution to mitigate this risk and ensure these people are safe. This is particularly relevant in construction as many projects are based in developing areas where anti-social behaviour is not uncommon and there have been a few incidents where this has been apparent.
On this project they have piloted a lone working device/app which is now used on all sites to solve this problem. The device is handheld or can be worn around the neck and has a GPS system which will track where the user is.
It is all connected to a call centre who will check in with the user at regular intervals so that they can click a button to confirm that they are ok. If they do not respond within the specified time frame they will be called directly and if they still do not pick up an emergency response team will be sent to the location to assist. The device also has the capacity to raise the alarm manually and silently if required.
