Net Zero Carbon Site

Sir Robert McAlpine are preempting legislative changes by pledging Net Zero Carbon by 2024. Contributing to this, Battersea Phase 3a has been operating as a Net Zero Carbon site since January 2020.

The project Net Zero Carbon strategy covers all operational emissions (gas, fuel and electricity on site) and involves offsetting 115% of our outputs. Our offsetting occurs both locally and in Malaysia and involves sequestration and Malaysian forest protection schemes. The strategy used to achieve net zero has been self-certified to PAS 2060 and provides an opportunity for the project to lead the industry towards more responsible carbon practices, encouraging other projects to preempt legislative changes.

Our approach centres around an avoid, reduce, replace, offset hierarchy and has introduced drastic changes in operations. For example, Net Zero has seen essential/non-essential circuits implemented, the entire site is also powered by a carbon neutral electricity supply, new electric and hybrid plant in use, solar powered lighting rigs, and a strict no idling policy enforced.

The entire workforce is briefed on the strategy and the contributory changes they can make including avoiding generators, energy efficiency training and using machinery with only the most efficient engine standards. The strategy is communicated through the project noticeboard, Sustainability Leadership Team and in the induction each of which educating the workforce on our industry carbon footprint.
