Health and safety is a priority on a construction site, factoring in the wellbeing of every operative on site. New technologies can play a vital role in tracking and managing on-site health and safety.

See the details below to find out more about a new health and safety app:

  • The Berkeley Innovation Fund awarded £2 million to the development of the fuseAware safety system. The project has since been developed and tested on site over a period of 18 months.
  • The system involves fitting the site with sensors, beacons and durable outdoor screens displaying real-time data and illustrated signage.
  • Operatives wear a low-cost smartwatch which receives alerts when they are in a high-risk scenario.
  • Supervisors use the fuseAware app on smartphones and receive an alert if an operative breaks a condition set up through the system, such as limited time doing a certain task.
  • If the transgression is repeated beyond a certain threshold, an intervention request is issued and the operative is required to conduct additional training, tested by an e-learning module.
  • Each operative’s details are recorded individually, including their experience level and skills, which calculates risk and factors into whether an alert is sent.
  • Operations can be overseen through an administrative app providing real-time data capture, monitoring and reporting. This tracks each operative individually, alerting for lone working and monitoring how long an operative was working at height, whether they violated a condition etc.
  • Data can be viewed for an individual construction site or for all sites with the system enabled.
  • The application is available in multiple languages, and can be tailored to suit an individual operative’s favoured language.
